Six-color printing (often called Hexachrome or expanded gamut printing) is an advanced method that goes beyond traditional four-color (CMYK) printing by adding two extra inks. It significantly broadens the color gamut, allowing for more vibrant, lifelike images, smoother gradients, and better reproduction of tricky spot colors.
The "four-color" in "four-color printing" refers to the four ink colors—cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK)—used in offset printing presses and many digital presses. These four colors are combined to make a wider range of colors. (And don‘t worry, your book or wall art can have more than just four colors!) 1. Application differences:
① Four color printing:
Suitable for conventional printed materials that do not require particularly high color accuracy, such as regular books, newspapers, flyers, posters, general packaging, etc. This type of printed material focuses on information transmission and does not have a high demand for extreme color reproduction. Four color printing is sufficient to meet the needs.
② Six color printing:
Suitable for high-end printed materials with extremely high requirements for color quality, such as high-end picture books, art photography collections, cosmetics packaging, luxury brochures, etc. This type of printed product requires precise color expression to enhance its texture and visual impact, so the color advantage of six color printing comes in handy.
2.Cost differences:
① Four color printing:
Lower cost. On the one hand, only four types of ink and four sets of printing plates are needed, resulting in lower material and plate making costs; On the other hand, the process is mature, the debugging time is short, the production efficiency is high, and the labor and time costs are relatively low, especially in large-scale production, the cost advantage is more obvious.
② Six color printing:
The cost is higher. The addition of two sets of spot color printing plates and spot color ink will directly increase the cost of plate making and materials; At the same time, the process debugging is complex, the printing accuracy requirements are high, and waste products are prone to occur, resulting in relatively low production efficiency and further increase in labor and time costs. Usually, only high-end printing needs have sufficient budget to choose six color printing.
