Definition of Accordion Fold
As the name suggests, an accordion fold is folded exactly like a hand accordion. All its fold lines are parallel; when folded, the pages stack neatly on top of one another, and when unfolded, it lays completely flat in a long continuous strip. It is sometimes also referred to as a parallel fold or a zigzag fold.
Principles of Creating an Accordion Fold
It involves making multiple parallel folds in the same direction, alternating back and forth. In other words, each fold goes in the opposite direction of the previous one, ultimately forming a continuous "Z-shaped" structure.
The most common formats have 6 panels (created by 2 folds) and 8 panels (3 folds). Theoretically, you can keep increasing the number of folds and panels as long as the paper allows.

Disadvantages of the Accordion Fold
Prone to Wear and Tear: The exposed edges of the folded panels are susceptible to wear, fraying, or getting dirty with frequent folding and unfolding.
Complex Page Sequencing: The physical page order is non-sequential (jumping). This makes it highly prone to layout errors during design. A detailed fold-out mockup (or blueprint) must be drafted before starting the actual design process.
Strict Paper Requirements: If the paper is too thick, folding becomes difficult and the creases may easily crack or burst. Conversely, if the paper is too thin, it lacks stiffness and can appear cheap. Coated art paper weighing between 105gsm and 157gsm is generally recommended.
Content Clearance Needed: Important text or images near the fold lines should be inset by a certain margin (typically 3-5mm). This prevents the content from being hidden in the creases or becoming difficult to read when folded.
